How to Make a Wig Hairpiece

Wigs are hairpieces that men and women wear to cover full or partial baldness. A wig can also serve as a cheaper alternative to therapies for restoring hair, such as a hair transplants. Wigs are usually custom made and expensive. You might feel embarrassed to enter a hair replacement store or hair salon to inquire about one. You can save yourself money and embarrassment by making your own wig.

Things You'll Need

Styrofoam head Human hair Wig cap Bonding glue Small paintbrush Blow dryer

Step 1

Purchase a package of raw human hair from a beauty supply store in your area. Never buy synthetic hair, because you want your wig to look as natural as possible. Choose the color and length you want, so cutting and styling it will be easy. The human hair will usually be arranged in tracks or layers.

Step 2

Purchase a high-quality wig cap. The wig cap is vital to successful and comfortable wig wearing. Wig caps will cost anywhere from $10 to $50 and are unisex. Put the wig cap on the Styrofoam head and make sure it firmly covers the head.

Step 3

Remove the hair from the packaging. Lay it out and arrange the hair tracks, according to how you want to put it on the Styrofoam head.

Step 4

Use a small paintbrush and begin applying bonding glue to a hair track. Carefully place the glued hair track on the wig cap. Glue the remaining hair tracks starting at the base and working your way up to the top of the Styrofoam head. Firmly press each hair track to keep it in place. Make sure you cover the entire head so the wig cap is not visible.

Step 5

Blow dry the Styrofoam head after you have completed gluing all the hair tracks to it. This will ensure the glued tracks dry quickly. Use a low or medium setting on your blow dryer and hold it 1 foot away from the Styrofoam head. Take your finished wig to a hair stylist to have it cut and styled.
